The Government of Greece has failed to renew several important domains.
The Government did not renew the domains Athens2004.com and Athens2004.gr, which were both official websites of the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The Government did not renew the domain EU2003.gr, which was an official website about the Greek presidency of the European Union.
It is a shame that such important websites are gone due to the failure to pay very nominal renewal fees. This shows the importance of proper management of domains in large organizations, as well as the importance of registering domains for as long as possible.

France is the latest of the ccTLDs to reach the one million .fr registrations. The milestone was reached on January 11.Given the population of France, it has taken a while to reach this mark compared to other ccTLDs. For example, .de will reach their twelve millionth domain registration this year, and even smaller countries such as Australia with around a third of the population and similarly restrictive/protective, depending on who you ask, registration rules, passed the mark late last year. Switzerland (.ch) also reached the one million mark in 2007. A large part of the success of .de registrations has been the less restrictive rules. (Read more…)

The domain name ILoveMusicCity.com is up for sale. Owned by Nashville’s Ashley Hayes since 1999, she says she does not have the time to develop the domain name so it can reach its full potential. This is much the same reason given for selling job.at last month by Markus Ertler. (Read more…)

The New Zealand Herald has a profile of ICANN’s new chair Peter Dengate Thrush this weekend. The article begins “Wellington lawyer Peter Dengate Thrush might seem an unlikely choice to head an international internet governance body.”
However the article delves into Peter’s background, and asks “how did a New Zealand patent attorney and trial lawyer with a BSc in zoology and geology end up heading the body sometimes described as the UN of cyberspace?” (Read more…)

On the ICANN Blog, Veni Markovski discusses recent reports of the creation of an independent Russian Internet.
He writes, “There have been some reports in the past few days about possible “division” of the Internet in Russia, tied in with speculation that the forthcoming Cyrillic domain names will be used to grant the Russian government more control over its citizens. The source of this speculation appears to be an article published in UK newspaper The Guardian. That article was then reproduced in a number of Russian news articles, most of them quoting a direct translation published by SecurityLab.
There was another article, also published by several Russian sources and based on a press-conference given by the Russian country-code top-level domain administration (.ru ccTLDA). Right now ICANN is running tests on TLDs, including one in Russian – http://пример.испытание – and the article made clear that the desire of the Russian Internet community would be, if the tests are successful, to have a new IDN – .РФ (from Russian Federation, in Cyrillic). MARINA DEL REY, California: Following the posting of the Frameworks and Principles for Accountability and Transparency, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers today published a document that countenances some possible additional improvements in dispute resolution mechanisms. In response to feedback on accountability and transparency issues during the consultation process — especially feedback received during a workshop at ICANN’s Los Angeles meeting held in November 2007 — the ‘Next Steps’ document contains two ideas:
First, that the Board Governance Committee schedule a review of existing dispute resolution mechanisms to identify ways in which they may might provide even higher levels of accountability. This approach is inline with ICANN’s commitment to regularly review its structures.
Second, that in the context of the upcoming Board review, the possibility of a mechanism for the community to ask the Board to reconsider a decision be investigated, along with a mechanism to dissolve and reconstitute the Board should it engage in unethical or other misbehavior.
The document [PDF, 89K] is posted for public notice prior to final consideration by the Board. (Read more…)

Premier Ed Stelmach, making an announcement in October, says the fight over edstelmach.ca is about protecting his name.
(Jeff McIntosh/Canadian Press). Dave Cournoyer, a political science student who blogs about Alberta issues, bought the rights to the domain for $14 in April. Last month, he received a letter from a Calgary law firm that represents Stelmach, threatening him with a lawsuit if he did not give up the domain.
The premier said it’s an ownership issue and he believes Cournoyer, who used to work for Alberta’s Opposition Liberals, bought the domain for political reasons.
“I’m from the school that your name is your name,” said Stelmach Thursday. “And if some people want to use it to their advantage, well then I guess you learn through the process and you have to do whatever you do to protect your name, which you know mom and dad gave it to me for free.” (Read more…)

MARINA DEL REY, Calif.: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers today released the first version of a new ‘Dashboard’ that will offer measurements of ICANN’s performance in numerous areas across the organization.”At this stage the ‘Dashboard’ has reports from Finance, IANA, and IETF request queue. We are looking for community feedback on this tool and will expand the reports available over time,” said Dr Paul Twomey, ICANN’s President and CEO.
The ‘Dashboard’ is the result of a substantial effort within ICANN to define measurable results, establish repeatable processes for collecting data, and to select and install software.
“This is about continuous improvement, transparency, and accountability to our community,” Dr Twomey added.
Members of the public are invited to test drive the ‘Dashboard’ at http://www.icann.org/idashboard/public/. (Read more…)
