Forbes.com published an interesting article about Neustar, known best as the .BIZ, .US and kids.us domain and US based ENUM registry. This Forbes article discusses the financial decline of Neustar in 2007 as well as the promising future of this major Internet institution.
The article reads, “You would think that as the only provider of a set of essential services relied on by thousands of communications service providers (CSPs), NeuStar would hold up fairly well in this weak-handed market, especially when the company has displayed impressive growth in recent periods. Yet the stock has fallen more than 20% since mid-October and ended down 11% for 2007.
However, according to our quantitative model employed by the Forbes Growth Investor, the stock is due for a rebound.”

Bob Marley’s Wailers, also known as “The Wailers”, recently won a cybersquatting and trademark infringement lawsuit brought by another Wailers musical group, who started using the band name ten years before Bob Marley named his group in 1969. In 1998, the Bob Marley Wailers registered www.wailers.com and in order for the plaintiffs to win their case, they would have had to prove that Bob Marley’s Wailers registered wailers.com in bad faith. Since no evidence of bad faith was introduced by plaintiffs the case was dismissed.

An interesting posting on Daily Domainer. Daily Domainer has analysed Domain Name Journal’s top 100 reported sales in 2007 and 2006 and found the median price for sales has increased from $124,000 in 2006 to $197,500 in 2007. This is an increase of 59.27%, which, as they say, is a pretty good representation of this year’s bull market in premium domains. (Read more…)

The Russian government is looking to create a Cyrillic internet, but is it just another case of Big Brother controlling its citizens?
The Guardian recently published a story on Russia’s desire “for greater control over the Russian-language part of the net – and its aim seems to be to create a web that operates in Cyrillic, completely independent from the wider web.” However, The Guardian notes the “problem for Russia is that its top-level domain – with the ASCII suffix .ru – translates into Cyrillic as .py, the domain name of Paraguay.” This could lead to security problems for Russia’s internet users. So, according to ICANN’s Kim Davies, Russia is “is pushing for .rf in Cyrillic.” (Read more…)
