Name Intelligence announced that the fourth annual Domain Roundtable Conference will be held April 18th-20th in San Francisco. It will be held between two events, directly after Ad Tech (April 15th – 17th) and right before Web 2.0 Expo (April 22nd – April 25th).
This will be the first city outside of Seattle that gets to experience a Domain Roundtable in action. They hope to bring in a lot of Bay Area people and companies for the event.
According to Jay Westerdal, they have a simple formula. Domains + Ads + Web 2.0 = Domain Roundtable San Francisco 2008

NEW YORK – Zagat Survey today launches ZAGAT.mobi, an advertising-supported mobile website. ZAGAT.mobi features the company’s signature restaurant, nightlife and hotel content for all major U.S. cities, London and other select international destinations. “We pioneered the concept of ‘consumer generated content’ almost 30 years ago,” notes Nina Zagat. “As the media landscape has evolved, we have taken a ‘platform agnostic’ approach to helping consumers make smart decisions by making our content available to them however and wherever they have needed it.”

According to Vance Hedderel, Director, PR and Communications for .mobi, starting today Monday August 20th, 650 .mobi city names are being freed up and made available to city specific entities, their local governments or their designees for an initial period of two years with provisions for renewing the names. Until today, dotMobi has kept these names on reserve to ensure that they would be available for cities to develop relevant content for locals and for tourists. (Read more…)

Canada’s Globe and Mail says the town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, is a “pivotal battleground in the global jihad.” This beautiful town of 7,000 people is home to a branch of Register.com. And Register.com allows people to anonymously register a domain name for a few extra dollars says the Globe and Mail. Any of these anonymously registered domain names, says the paper, have “the same address and phone number in Yarmouth.”

In August 2007 ICANN launched a consultation paper on new top level domains and ICANN is encouraging input. There have been submissions in the development of this report that are well worth a read. There are currently 19 live and active sites on the kids.us domain. While these 19 appear to be operating under both the spirit and letter of the law, serious potential vulnerabilities exist within the domain.
Under the terms of the current registration policy, there are several importance due diligence measures required to launch a .kids.us site. To start, if an individual wants to register a kids.us domain – for example – they must first register the domain name through an accredited .kids.us registrar. The domain name is reserved, but it is not allowed to go live immediately on the Internet. Next, the registrant must submit the website content to the registry directly so that it can be reviewed and verified pursuant to the kids.us content policy. If all of the content on the site passes, then the domain name is allowed to go live. (Read more…)

The New York Times published an interesting article by Stuart Elliott indicating that TIAA-CREF, a large marketer of financial services, is seeking to differentiate itself by using a “trusted” .org instead of a .com domain.

According to Eurolang, Brittany (.bzh), Galizia (.gal), Flanders (.vl) and Wales (.cym) representatives of the Top Level Domain (TLD) campaigners are set to meet in Santiago de Compostela (Galizia) in September this year to consider forming a coalition of bids to the administrators of the Word Wide Web, ICANN.
They have been inspired by the resounding success of the ‘.cat‘ domain for Catalan websites. There has been a 33% increase in the use of the Catalan language on the web since it was established last year, with over 22,000 websites using ‘.cat’. The leader of the ‘.cat’ campaign, Amadeu Abril, has been extremely active in supporting and advising the other countries. (Read more…)

The enthusiasm for Beijing’s upcoming Olympic Games is rising and with that it’s official web site’s popularity. You can connect to the Olympic Games either at www.beijing2008.cn or www.olympicgames.cn. According to Alexa, a web site ranking site, www.beijing2008.cn has already reached the level of 8222’s most popular site on the internet as of August 16th 2007. And that about a year before the games begin.
The number of visitors has been steadily increasing as the world population becomes increasingly more interested in the upcoming Olympic Games. The web site is well designed and shows pictures of the different venues. Particularly interesting to see is the aquatic center which is still being built and featires a ceiling and outside walls resembling water bubbles. Check it out!
