The internet could run out of IP addresses by 2011, leading to new users or mobile device users not being able to access theinternet according to an OECD report out this week. The OECD warns that 85 per cent of all IP addresses are already in use.

Gas.com and israel.com is about to go up for grabs in an upcoming Moniker auction. Gas.com is expected to commence bidding at $200,000 while israel.com’s bidding is expected to commence at $5.5 million. A number of other domain names will be up for auction including action.com, grass.com, idol.com, pay.com, susan.com, koran.com, jackpot.com, BlueRay.com and InsuranceRates.com.

When the rest of the domain industry increases prices by 10% because Verisign announced an overall price increase for .com domains, most of us understood the reasoning and accepted the price hike reluctantly. But when Yahoo! recently announced in March that the annual renewal price for a domain is increasing from $9.95 to $12.95 a year, a whopping 30% increase, we weren’t quite sure why such an increase was warranted?!

Although I always feel I’m a bother, Tess certainly never makes any suggestion to lend to that notion. Indeed I received very comprehensive instructions to a vault of expiring names that is the online equivalent of the U.S. Treasury…

The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs wants guarantees that the .nl domain will remain sovereign and accessible under all circumstances. State Secretary, Frank Heemskerk, believes that since the .nl domain has such large public interest, the security and sovereignty for the Netherlands must be guaranteed by domain registry SIDN. To that end, the Ministry wants to sign an agreement with Dutch Domain Registry SIDN in mid-June, which will help secure those concerns. This move is reflected in a written reply by the State Secretary that was also addressing concerns about the collapsed landrush of numeric domains, which we reported on earlier.

Here are the results of the Sedo’s BeNeLux Auction featuring .nl, .be & .lu domains, held on May 9th. Over 7000 people viewed the auction and in our estimate about 330 bids were posted. The auction was extended by nearly 2.5 hours before kinderwagens.nl and relatiegeschenk.nl were sold.
