WIPO says Unprecedented Number of Cybersquatting Cases in 2007

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced there were an unprecedented number of cybersquatting cases in 2007. WIPO also said the evolving nature of the domain name registration system is causing growing concern for trademark owners around the world.
In 2007 there were a record 2,156 complaints alleging cybersquatting filed with the WIPO’s Arbitration and Mediation Center (Center). This was an 18% increase over 2006 and a 48% increase over 2005 in the number of generic and country code Top Level Domain (gTLDs and ccTLDs) disputes.

Fusu sells first Domain on The Domain Stock Exchange

First sale of a Fusu-listed domain brings returns of 55-80% to its investors.
Today marks another milestone for Fusu, the Domain Stock Exchange: A domain listed on the Exchange was sold, bringing its shareholders a significant return for their investment.
KPY.com was listed on the Exchange during the public Beta cycle with a value of $5,000 and found 14 investors buying 45% of the domain. In the trading, the market value of the domain rose to $5,800.

Habitual cybersquatters, or those who are repeatedly named as respondents and ruled against for registering domain names that incorporate the trademarks of others, are becoming more and more familiar with the UDRP. In fact, these habitual cybersquatters are learning what it takes to win a UDRP arbitration, trying to use the available defenses (whether flawed or not) in the UDRP Rules to their advantage, responding to Complaints they receive instead of simply letting the domain name transfer, and becoming more sophisticated. Shouldn’t you as a trademark owner or a domainer understand as much, if not more, than they do?

Demand Media has bought Pluck, a provider of social networking software for between US$50 million and $75 million reports Law.com.
Richard Rosenblatt, co-founder, chairman and CEO of social networking firm and domain name registrar Demand Media, said Pluck “is the next step” for both his company and social networking in general continues Law.com. Wal-Mart Parody OK says US Court

A US Court has said it is OK for a man to parody the retail giant using domain names, t-shirts, novelty items and satirical merchandise that criticises the company.
The court rejected Wal-Mart’s claim of trademark infringement and said Charles Smith can continue to operate his websites using the domain names walocaust.com and walqaeda.com.
