Internet users interested in the new .ASIA domain identity should now visit www.asiadns.com to see if they’re eligible for their first choice of top-level domains during the ongoing “Sunrise” registration period. Dot ASIA is a widely anticipated new top-level domain class that will allow for domain names encompassing the entire Asia/Pacific region, from Turkey to Japan. “Obtaining .ASIA domains is more time-effective and cost-effective than registering for country-specific domain names,” said Frederick Schiwek, vice president of sales and marketing at EuroDNS, parent company of AsiaDNS.
“Furthermore, these domain names will be more search engine-friendly than country-specific domains, so users have a better chance of ranking well.”
During the Sunrise period, registrants for.ASIA domains are being given priority in three main phases to prevent speculators from stepping in. The schedule is as follows:
Oct 9, 2007 – Sunrise Period 1: government bodies and related organizations
Oct. 9 – Oct. 30, 2007 – Sunrise Periods 2a and 2b: trademarks and service marks as well as general registered marks
Nov. 13, 2007 – Jan. 15, 2008 – Sunrise Period 2c: extended protection for registered marks; Sunrise Period 3: companies, societies and other organizations
Targeted for February 2008 – Land Rush Period
Targeted for March 2008 – Ongoing Registration
In addition, AsiaDNS has partnered with the airfare site Asia.com to alert travelers with Asia destinations of the domains’ availability. “From now on, we are the registry for Asia.com, and there will be a tab on its site for domains. This way, we can efficiently reach interested parties,” explained Schiwek.
The partnership facilitated the .asia.com domain name giveaway, but once the land rush period, currently targeted for February 2008, begins, Internet users will have to purchase those third-level domains for 18 euros.
“Asia is home to more than 60 percent of the world’s population, and it is undergoing tremendous economic and cultural expansion, so domain owners will be able to reach millions of people at one time,” said Schiwek. “These domains are expected to go fast, so those who don’t act now may have to settle for their second or even fifth choice.”
