Pennsylvania has a proposal to ban cybersquatting. The proposal follows Republican Jason Gherghel’s decision to register various combinations domain names of his opponent, Melinda Kantner, prompting the bill, says the state Rep. Neal P. Goodman, D-Schuylkill.
Upon entering URLs such as melindakantner.com users were taken to Gherghel’s web site. Goodman says he “initiated the proposal when he learned authorities had no legal grounds to pursue a case against Gherghel, 33, of West Brunswick Township” according to The Morning Call.
The Morning Call goes on to say, “The bill, the Pennsylvania Political Cyberfraud Abatement Act, or House Bill 1900, has the bipartisan support of 71 legislators. Goodman made the announcement with Kantner, House Majority Whip Keith McCall, D-Carbon, and state Rep. Tim Seip, D-Schuylkill/Berks.
“Gherghel, who has relinquished Kantner’s domain names, said in a telephone interview the legislation is ‘just another desperate attempt by my opponent to hide the fact that she has absolutely no credentials. This was resolved back in April.’”
