That is a way to have your information hidden on the whois page. Why you need to hide that? Well I believe that everyone here have own reasons for that

It is a service which many registrars provide for free or for a fee. one might need private whois to protect their ids from whois harvesters. These harvesters gather all contact information from various sources and later sell that list to possible internet marketing companies. So if you do not want to be spammed, you should go in for private whois.
Enom charged $6 for it. ResellerClub offers it for free with every Domain Name registered through them.
