Environmental domain name battle heats up

The battle to control the leasing of the proposed .eco domain name extension has begun heating up.In the running are two major consortiums, one American and on Canadian, which hope to make millions from the administration of the new web address – which the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is expected to introduce as early as the start of next year.The first firm set on controlling the new suffix is Dot Eco, which is backed by former vice-president Al Gore.Meanwhile, Big Room, a Canadian firm backed by Mikhail Gorbachev is also vying to get control.This week Dot Eco issued a 17-page report undermining Big Room’s business model, claiming that the firm would deprive environmentally-friendly projects of much needed cash because of its large operating costs.The report is the first direct attack made in the battle to take control of the .eco domain name.Dot Eco claims it will donate 57 per cent of its profits to environmental projects around the world. Meanwhile, ICANN is still debating the issues surrounding its plan to introduce hundreds of new generic domain name extensions.
