The .Car is Getting Ready for the Road ATX Group, the world’s largest independent telematics service provider to the automotive industry, is proposing a .car top-level domain extension in order to support websites designed specifically for web browsing inside vehicles. Several large car companies, such as BMW and Chrysler, are already bringing the internet into their latest automobiles. However, full access to the web inside your car could have potentially dangerous consequences. Alongside the Connected Vehicle Trade Association, ATX is also working to convince these prominent car companies to define requirements for adapting safe web applications into their vehicles at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Convergence conference in Detroit this fall. Such features as text-to-speech which would allow the content on WebPages to be read aloud to a driver are among the suggestions being discussed. ATX notes that “the primary vision of the .car domain extension is to give motorists the ability to surf the World Wide Web and experience customized Web browsing.”“This proposal is similar to the adaptation that was required to develop an interface between the smart phone and the Web,” says ATX President and CEO Steve Millstein. “Browsing the Internet in the vehicle is a unique environment with unique characteristics.” If the .car domain extension is introduced, it would have the potential to open up an entirely new domain market similar to what we’ve seen with the creation of the .mobi domain extension.Drivers will not only be able to access vehicle performance, maintenance diagnostics and vehicle location data, but ATX claims that the .car initiative will provide safe and convenient access to web content and updates to meet customer expectations.By Stephanie Nichols, Customer Support Team
