Afternic have announced they have made changes to Afternic Auctions, their expiring domain auction service, which makes it easier to find exclusive premium domains.
There is now the ability to see how many PreOrders have been submitted on a domain before its live auction starts. This makes it easier to easily find the hottest domains. Or there is the option of spotting the domains with the least competition by finding domains without any or with few PreOrders.

Geoff Huston and George Michaelson recently wrote an article published on Circle ID on IPv6 and looks at where we are now. They say following the stories of impending doom for IPv4 addresses running out, that didn’t eventuate as predicted, we are now getting to the stage where we really will run out of addresses. They write that since "Since 2005 we’ve been consuming IPv4 addresses at a rate of some 160 million addresses per year, and what’s left in the IPv4 unallocated address pool looks like lasting for no more than another 3 years."

Domain Round Table (DRT) is starting next Friday in San Francisco and I’m sure that it will be an outstanding event. I couldn’t help myself, the allure of all those great domainers in one place was too much with the result I’m once again heading across the Pacific to join with my friends in celebration of our great industry.What a grand statement that was! Happily it’s true! Next Friday I’m boarding a plane to travel to DRT and while I’m there I’ve been asked to moderate a number of sessions relating to domain parking. The two sessions are:

You load up your new site to your hosting provider, go live, and your site is an instant hit. 1000 hits the first hour, and suddenly, there’s a YouTube video of your site. 10,000 hits in hour two…you are patting each other on the back, and then hour three…wait…whats’ this? 0 hits. Zero hits ?!?!?

.ME Registry officials today announced the roll-out plan for .ME, the new domain name extension. .ME is expected to be utilized as both a personalized Web address and as a catchy business marketing tool around the world.
The registry will begin accepting .ME applications in May, for the start of what is known as the General Sunrise Period, a time when only trademark owners can apply. However, registrars who sign up before that time can start accepting Sunrise and Landrush applications and pre-registration requests, as soon as they’d like. As was the case with .ASIA, multiple parties will be allowed to submit applications for the same domain name. Domain names that receive more than one application will go to an auction process.

It is wonderful to see a prediction come true. The Australian domain governing body (AUDA) has finally taken the first steps to liberalizing the com.au namespace. Several years ago I predicted that this is the direction that AUDA would take simply on the basis that there is too much money to be made by liberalising the com.au namespace. This change means that domain name owners will be able to sell .com.au domains to anyone, not just if the name is in dispute.
With a stroke of a pen (or a tap of a key) AUDA has endorsed an aftermarket for Australian domains. If you read the fine print there are a few restrictions though:

Internet users can earn fish; very similar to the residents of Tokelau.
Dot TK – the registry for .TK domain names, today announced the launch of the Dot TK Ambassador Program – an affiliate system where users can earn Virtual Fish. The Ambassador Program is not a clickthrough referral service, but a system that enables new registrants to register a Dot TK domain name without leaving the Ambassador’s website.

ICANN today posted the schedule for its public Meeting to be held in Paris 22-26 June.
"With two and a half months to go, there are some important changes to the schedule that attendees need to know." said Paul Levins, Executive Officer and Vice President, Corporate Affairs. First, the meeting will end on Thursday the 26 of June. Historically the Board meeting has been held on the Friday morning of these meetings. That has involved an additional day’s time and expense by participants. In response to feedback and in the interests of economy, this meeting will see the Board meeting take place on Thursday evening with the meeting ending that night". Mr Levins said.

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany: The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Lomonosov Moscow State University Institute of Information Security Issues (IISI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on increasing awareness on Internet issues inside Russia.
"Formalizing how ICANN can work together with IISI will help both organizations reach out to the broader Russian Internet community and build increased awareness of issues like Internationalized Domain Names, IPv6 uptake, cybersecurity and domain name development," said Dr Paul Twomey, ICANN’s President and CEO. "This MoU is mutually beneficial since it will ensure both organizations have a direct connection into what is happening in the global Internet."

Been a lot of talk last few months about Geo domains. Associated Cities have done a great job pushing Geo domains to the forefront of the domain industry however, very little have been said how to make such domains winners. The main question here is what is the plan, what is the exit? As demand for such domains is high (mostly between domain investors) most prices for such domains are retail which means, the play here isn’t PPC but either development or end-user resale. Read more…

Paul Twomey has been in Dubai for the ICANN regional meeting last week, in part telling participants internet users in the Middle East may be able to petition to have TLDs specific to the Middle East, such as .arab, by the end of 2008. The article notes that if things go according to plan, those domain names may even be in Arabic. However Paul Twomey said problems may occur if there are IDN TLDs such as cyber-squatting, typo-squatting and domaining.
