NCC Group and OpenRegistry announced recently that they will launch a new programme to assist new top level domain applicants.

"NCC Group, the world’s largest software and data escrow company, and OpenRegistry, a leading backend registry service provider, today announce a programme to assist prospective new top level domain applicants with their ICANN applications and management of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs).Since a new owner of a gTLD becomes a registry themselves, with the ability to sell usage of the domain name on to other companies, data escrow ensures that the registry is able to continue to operate in the event of a physical, technical or business failure.As part of the application process for a gTLD, ICAAN requires applicants to place domain registration data in escrow.OpenRegistry helps prospective applicants with technical back-end recovery requirements whilst NCC Group works with them to ensure they have the required data escrow protection in place.On June 20th 2011, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organisation in charge of the overall management and stability of the Internet, approved the new Top Level Domains program that could see the creation of thousands of new gTLDs. ICANN’s program expands the 22 gTLD’s currently available, to include generic TLDs (e.g. .shop), geographic TLDs (e.g. .paris) or brand-specific TLDs (e.g. .adidas).NCC Group has been active in the domain name community since 2007 when it assisted ICANN with the development of the gTLD Registry Failover Plan. Since then, NCC Group has been the preferred escrow provider for a number of registries and registrars worldwide.
