Kentucky Domain Seizure Meeting Report

According to the Internet Commerce Association (ICA), the press summit went well and resulted in the ICA filing a Memorandum of Amicus Curiae in opposition to the Kentucky court order attempting to seize 141 gambling related domain names.
Reportedly, there were about 15-20 people in the audience and three TV cameras. There were seven opposition members on the panel. A couple of the panel members defended online gambling, however, the overwhelming sentiment from the panel was that the seizure order was much bigger than the gambling issue. After the round of panel introductions, the panel answered questions for more than a half hour. The RIPE NCC (Network Coordination Centre) – an independent organisation that supports the infrastructure of the Internet for Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia – will gather key industry figures from the Middle East to discuss Internet growth and innovation at RIPE 57. This will be the first event of its kind for Internet development in the region.

The latest of Sedo’s top domain name sales is below. Sedo’s top three sellers this week were all European ccTLD names – allgemeine.de (€14,000), rachat-de-credit.fr (€13,500) and sexe.ch (€12,500). A bodyguard who registered the domain names miccosukeetribeofindiansofflorida.com and billycypress.com is refusing to give them up to the tribe for less than $500,000 according to a report in The Miami Herald.
But after refusing offers of up to $100,000, the tribe is now threatening legal action to reclaim the domain names.

Two brothers who registered the domain name salvationarmyonline.org on 3 September 2005, less than a week after Hurricane Katrina swept through New Orleans, were sentenced to jail for more than eight and nine years jail for fraudulently collecting money for Hurricane Katrina victims on behalf of the Salvation Army. Despite the robustness of the online advertising industry the current negative economic sentiment will flow and is flowing through to the domain industry. There are two reasons for this:
Google and Yahoo are both under pressure to over perform to maintain their share price in a massively declining market. Despite this focus both Google and Yahoo’s share price has suffered enormously during to the US financial meltdown. Google is almost half what it was 12 months ago and we won’t mention what has happened to Yahoo.
