If you are an organization currently looking to register a new gTLD for a specific geographic area, make sure you have all the facts before you apply. If your application does not stress multi-territory cooperation for your geographic gTLD or governmental support, ICANN will likely deny your application.
In a letter posted to the ICANN website on October 8th, 2008 but dated October 2nd, ICANN CEO & President Paul Twomey covers an issue surrounding geographic gTLDs with the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Final Report on the Introduction of New gTLDs and one of the founding principles of the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC).
DNJournal Releases October 16th 2008 Weekly Sales Report

The new weekly domain sales report is out at DNJournal.com. The aftermarket got back on track this week with a solid outing led by one of the year’s five biggest country code sales at an eye-popping $300,000. The AfternicDLS handled that sale and another six-figure transaction was booked as the first wave of completed live auction sales from last month’s T.R.A.F.F.I.C. New York conference was reported by RickLatona.com. Sedo just missed posting a third six-figure sale with a two-letter .com that came in at $99,000. There was a lot of variety on our all extension leader board with eight ccTLDs crashing the .com party, along with three .nets and a .info. You can get all of the details here.

On November 1st, 2008 ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) will meet in Cairo, Egypt to discuss the introduction of new top level domain names (gTLDs). The proposal calls for the adoption of new gTLDs to facilitate choice and competition in the domain name registration services, including include the introduction of new geographic designations such as city name extensions (for example .berlin and .paris). These new designations would require supporting documentation for registration but anyone can apply.
Cold.com Domain Name being Auctioned for US$1 Million Minimum Bid

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Cold.com will be auctioned in late November with a minimum acceptable bid of US$1 million, announced Patent Kinetics, LLC, an intellectual property strategy, evaluation, and brokerage company. Sealed bids are being accepted until November 14.

In the next two weeks, in the lead up to ICANN’s Cairo public meeting , the new generic top-level domain (gTLD) Applicant Guidebook, also called the “draft Request for Proposal (RFP)”, will be released. This document will provide information to applicants wanting to apply for a new gTLD.
