I’m sitting in the Qantas club at the moment reflecting on what the upcoming week in San Francisco will bring. Nothing like winging my way across the Pacific once again 🙂
I must admit it that I’m really looking forward to the sessions that I’m moderating on Saturday as they should prove to quite interesting. The panelists are all experts in their field and I think that the challenge will be ensure that we not only hear the best from them but also stick to the time constraints!

This is an update on the 2008 ICANN Nominating Committee (Nom Com). On 15 April 2008, the nomination period closed to be considered for one of the six open leadership positions. The Nom Com received 78 Statements of Interest from candidates worldwide during an open nomination period that ran from 15 December 2007 to 15 April 2008. 13 candidates are female, 65 are male.
The Nom Com began its work in November 2007 at the ICANN Annual Meeting in Los Angeles, California, and is evaluating qualified candidates for the following key positions within ICANN:

NIC Brazil has announced that starting May 1 2008, individuals and Brazilian residents will be able to register com.br domain names. At the moment only Brazilian companies can register com.br domain names. There are currently almost 1.3 million .br domain names registered.

About 250 domain name extensions, also known as ccTLD (country-code Top Level Domains), exist for various nations or territories around the world. Outside the United States, these suffixes are typically preferred over the global .com, primarily due to national pride and due to the fact that most premium .com domains have been registered already.
Argentina’s Web sites end in ".ar," while Germany gets ".de" stands for Deutschland, the country code extension for German. Then there’s ".aq" for Antarctica, a land with more penguins than computers.
But deciding who gets to have one or keep one can be tricky…

So what’s in store for the Colombia’s .CO ccTLD extension over the next few years?
Colombia’s telecommunications ministry has confirmed that Colombia’s namespace will get a new registry next year, moving away from the current registry run by the Los Andes University.
Under this new management it also promises a full relaunch with the following "tentative launch agenda":

NEW YORK – William Roper, the president and chief executive of VeriSign Inc., which runs some of the Internet’s core systems, received compensation in 2007 valued at $8.1 million, according to a proxy statement filed Wednesday.
Roper, who became VeriSign’s president and CEO on May 27, 2007, received a salary of $421,154, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The new weekly domain sales report is out at DNJournal.com. For the second week in a row we saw a sale that was big enough to take a place among the ten biggest reported so far this year. This week’s blockbuster went for more than $343,000. .Com had a field day on the all-extension leader board, sweeping 26 of 30 positions. In the Global Contenders race, .net had the upper hand claiming 11 of 20 chart entries (one of those ranks among the year’s 10 biggest GC sales). In the Country Code competition France came out on top as the .fr extension swept 7 ccTLD chart entries.

We recently reported that Google made changes to their sponsored ad listings and that analysts were attributing those changes to the Google’s plumeting stock price.
However, today, Google Inc. announced a first-quarter profit increase of 30 percent to surpass analysts’ predictions. This performance alleviates the economic worries that have hammered the Internet search leader’s stock this year. Fears that Google made the wrong decision by cutting out low yielding sponsored ads to display fewer high quality sponsors may after all be the right move.
