DI Research Indicates 1/10 New gTLDs Are Becoming Smaller

DI research shows that at the least 1 in 10 individual new gTLD are becoming smaller.
The research was made on 334 gTLDs from the first 2012 round, disregarding any dot-brand and any gTLD that had general availability date starting with March 14, 2015. It’s purpose was to select gTLDs with at least one year old in order to better analyze their grown rates.
It seems that volume doesn’t represent a way to measure success for dot-brands, especially because only registries can own names.
Following the research it was found out that:
96 (28.7%) were lower June 1 than they were 30 days earlier.
104 (31.1%) were lower June 1 than they were 90 days earlier.
76 (22.7%) were lower June 1 than they were 366 days earlier.
35 (10.4%) were lower on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
You could say that if a gTLD has become lower over the last month, quarter or year it is “shrinking”.

The average size of the zones, was 17,299 domains, but mixed they justified for 605,472 domains, below 34,412 on the year. Considering the over 20 million at global level, is not a big proportion.
While the largest was .网址 (.website) with 330,554 domains and annual decrease of 7, 487, the smallest was .wed, with 144 domains and annual decrease of 12
The average decrease across the year was 983 domains per gTLD, 1,025 across the quarter and 400 over the month.
Most of the shrank domains belong to Donuts, that pointed out the company has been targeting small and medium businesses and avoid the aggressive promotions.
“Too much focus on individual TLDs doesn’t accurately indicate the overall health of the TLD program in general and of our portfolio specifically,” were some of the words of a Donuts spokesperson.
