Accessibility has been a big issue foe me since I worked for a not for profit organisation dealing with disabilities. So it was pleasing for me to see an article in The Register that the British government has given all websites in the gov.uk domain till the end of 2008 to achieve the minimum, Level Double-A of the W3C Guidelines will have its domain withdrawn.
The Register feels this is foolhardy. The Register is wrong and misguided in its view. It is a great incentive for government agencies to get their websites to abide by the W3C guidelines. For too long website designers have ignored or paid lip service to the needs of people with disabilities, and more courageous decisions such as this need to be made to make the web accessible for all. CENTR has announced nic.tr Domain Name Registration, the registry for the .tr country code for Turkey, and SK-NIC, the registry for the .sk country code for the Slovak Republic have become full members. This brings CENTR’s tally of full members to 47, with a total of 55 members. (Read more…)

CNNIC has published its second list of “domain name violators”. The list includes four registrars – Xiamen Wuxiang Network Technology Company, Xiamen Guoge Network Technology Company, Xiamen Huitong Tianxia Technology Company and Xiamen Zhongyitong Network Service Company – and each registrar has been asked to rectify their business practices in question. The launch of .asia is another big story of the week along with the launch of the IDN test, gaining a lot of coverage around the world and in many languages. Most coverage simply reported the announcement, but a few articles delved a little deeper. The Register notes, “Carpet baggers will have to wait for their chance to hoover up potentially valuable names” as “governments, trademark owners, and official bodies” are currently the only entities able to register. Networkworld.com is reporting that the DotAsia Registry Organization has agreed to implement a policy to ban domain names associated with phishing. It’s the first time that a registry has undertaken such a drastic action to stop the proliferation of fake Web sites designed to dupe people into divulging sensitive personal data.

The launch of the IDN test by ICANN has been widely reported around the world in many languages. The Washington Post was one of the few to have a detailed story, saying the long wait “has left many in the non-English-speaking world impatient and angry. Questions of political and linguistic sovereignty, alongside accusations of American ‘digital colonialism,’ have motivated some countries to create their own Internets, effectively mounting a challenge to the World Wide Web.” (Read more…)

Currently, domain names in the .nz space only allow the 26 basic English (Latin) alphabet characters a-z, digits and the ‘-’ hyphen. The Māori alphabet has an additional five characters, the macronised vowels ā, ē, ī, ō, and ū, which are currently not allowed in .nz domain names. (Read more…)

As we’re all aware, .asia has opened, but not everyone is enthused. Charles Arthur writing in the online Guardian says to, “Curb your enthusiasm at the back. Oh, you were standing up to leave? Can’t blame you. In what must have domain registrars around the world rubbing their hands with glee and ordering new yachts, we now have another TLD that nobody can quite remember asking for (is it like the gherkin in a fastburger?) which will coin it from all the companies that feel they have to register their name just to make sure that nobody else does. Which especially means all the banks and other brands, but which equally means that typosquatters and phishers can have a new way to play havoc with everyone’s lives.” Arthur things .asia is pointless and just one good income stream for registrars. Meanwhile The Times, among others, says there will be “a flurry of ‘defensive registrations’ by companies that will not use their new ‘.asia’ web addresses but are determined to prevent cyber-speculators and counterfeiters from exploiting them.” And sex.asia is expected to be in the most in demand domain name.
