In the November 2007 Netcraft survey they received responses from 149,784,002 sites. This is an increase of increase of 7.0M sites since last month, and represents growth of over 40 million sites since the start of the year.
Netcraft report that much of this year’s growth has come from an increase in the growth of blogging sites, however this month’s growth comes from traditional hosting providers, with large numbers of new domains at GI Partners and InterServer. (Read more…)

Nominet has released their first ‘Domain name industry report’. The key themes examined in the report are: an analysis of global domain name statistics; registrant statistics and trends within the UK and a close look at the UK registrar market.
The findings of the report show that the domain name industry both globally and in the UK is healthy. The report demonstrates the extent of the uptake of the Internet in the UK. The dotAsia Organisation is pleased with the conclusion of the first Sunrise (SR2a) period with 15,334 applications were received. The second phase of Sunrise begins November 13, 2007 and will run through January 15, 2008.
“We are extremely pleased with the response. The process has also been smooth and calm. I am most excited to see that brand owners around the world are able to protect their names through our Sunrise process. ICANN have announced they will fast track Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs) according to a recent story in CNet. The story goes on to say ICANN has launched its campaign to provide internationalised ccTLDs–those that don’t use Latin characters–as soon as possible with the help of the Country Code Names Supporting Organization, an ICANN policy development body for ccTLD issues. South African Telkom’s attempt to get back the phonebook.co.za and whitepages.co.za domain names have been refused in terms of the .za ADR regulations.
The Complainants (Telekom) argued they have made extensive use of THE PHONE BOOK trade mark for many years in South Africa and these directories are commonly known as THE WHITE PAGES. As a result, Telekom argued they enjoy, in addition to the statutory rights, substantial common law rights in the trade marks THE PHONE BOOK and THE WHITE PAGES. (Read more…)

VeriSign, Inc. last week reported financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2007.

The majority of private Internet users in Germany favour the increased usage of local domain endings as in .city or .region in the future because the more memorable names will help them to better find the information that they are looking for. That is the core result of a representative survey that was commissioned by eco Verband der deutschen Internetwirtschaft and conducted by the market research company eResult at the beginning of October. eco is the registered association of German Internet enterprises. Go Daddy has issued a news release announcing their .US registrations are growing significantly, with Go Daddy the dominant .US registrar every month for the last two years, and 53% of all registrations in August, and similar numbers in September and October. (Read more…)

Personal domain names for individuals became available in .IE on October 31. Their availability came after a seven week notice period to allow time for sole traders, professionals, politicians, trademark holders who have not already registered their .IE domain name to do so under existing non-personal domain categories. .CAT reached it’s 25,000th domain name registration today (October 31), less than two years after launching.
“It is a marvellous achievement,” said Jordi Iparraguirre, Director General of Fundació puntCAT, “but we are even more pleased with the number of pages in Catalan as well as our ratio of pages per domain name which is in the top ten for TLDs around the world. (Read more…)
