Donuts has recently expressed its intention to acquire all of Rightside’s new gTLDs and related assets for $70 million.

“Donuts Inc., the world’s largest operator of new domain name extensions, today publicly announced its interest in acquiring Rightside Group, Ltd.’s entire registry of generic top-level domains (gTLDs, also known as domain extensions) and related assets for $70 million in an all-cash deal. Donuts believes that this potential transaction presents a strong strategic opportunity to bolster Donuts’ industry-leading gTLD portfolio and is compelling for Rightside and its investors. Donuts previously expressed its interest to Rightside relating to a potential acquisition for these assets but Rightside has repeatedly disregarded the offer.
This move is in keeping with Donuts’ stated strategy of expanding its selection of not-com domain extensions, such as .movie, .LTD, .agency, .email, .school, .group, and many more, each providing a more descriptive and creative means for big brands, entrepreneurs, and dreamers alike to brand their businesses, products and services. Donuts already leads the industry, having secured 196 domain extensions, and is best positioned to market these assets by driving industry consolidation.
Donuts’ Acquisition of Rightside’s Registry Business – A Win for All Parties
Separating Rightside’s registry and registrar businesses is the best approach to unlocking value in both businesses, providing Rightside with substantial capital for investor liquidity and the optionality to invest in and grow its core registrar businesses. The proposed acquisition complements Donuts’ current portfolio and expands the range of domains and related services that Donuts can offer, further enhancing what is already the greatest portfolio of domain extensions.

What it should have been a pleasant and productively growth, it is actually a less trust in the new gTLDs. According to an ICANN- supported survey, conducted by Nielsen, things are different than a year ago.
Compared to last year (14%), the recently published Global Consumer Survey shows that 16% of the participants had found of specific new gTLDs.
With .news driving the pack (33% recognition), the series for TLDs increased with 20% in the last year. Despite this, fewer persons visited their sites. Concerning the TLDs added during last year, visit average is 15%.
The amount of trust before the 2015 survey dropped from 49% to 45%, while after the survey it was at 52% on average.
This year the survey had a different target of domains: .website, .site, .space, .news, .online,.bank, .pharmacy, .pics, .top,and .builder.
The expected impact over the level of awareness that respondents should have had on individual extensions. Let’s take as example .xyz, that had the lowest awareness into the survey – 9% in comparison with 5% in 2015, or .top, that gathered only up 11% awareness. In top of the list were .email, .news and .online, with 32%, 33% and 30%.
This survey seems to be full of weird data. For instance, it revealed that 28% of participants say they have visited a .email website. In essence, this is not a gTLD designed for web use. In support of this finding there are the Alexa rankings, where you ought to found if the extension was that much visited.

The .CITY domain extension is the ideal extension for city information. DigitalTown has assembled the world’s largest portfolio of .CITY domains that exactly match to many of the largest population centers around the world as well as to the majority of the cities across the United States.
The network of .CITY domains are being made available to cities as part of a global network of public-private partnerships utilizing the DigitalTown SmartCity platform, ” announced the company.
